Malual chat is where it all began. Kerubino Kuanyin Bol was a divisional commander of the Sudan
Armed Forces, when he fired the first shot in Malual Chat, in a mutiny that would see a full throttled rebellion, led by Dr. John Garang, and three decades later, see the emergence of a free Republic.
On 4 June 1983, Colonel John Garang de Mabior, led the garrison at Bor and, on 16 October at Itang, formed the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and Army (SPLM/SPLA).
New Times returns to where it all began. Jonglei State, where Malual Chat is located, is the largest, by land and population, of the ten states in the Republic of South Sudan.
